I've been trying many cleaning products for my white tile kitchen floors since we moved in. Pine~Sol left smudges and left the floor slippery. Fantastik and 409 type cleaners left it sticky and noisy to walk on. I even tried Murphy's Oil Soap highly diluted and it, too, was greasy and slippery. I promised myself that when all of my products were gone (besides the Murphy's because I do use it for my wood) I'd try my hand at making a homemade solution.
In a spray bottle I mixed together:
1 cup of White Vinegar
2 cups of warm water
1-2 Tbsp of Dawn Dishsoap
The results? I'm very impressed! I've used it on my floors in the kitchen and they look great!
I've even used it on the kitchen counters with great success. It does smell like vingar but that's okay with me. Vinegar is supposed to be a natural disinfectant since it's a mild acid and is more gentle than household cleaners and bleach. I read that vinegar does NOT kill foodborne bacteria so I'd clean all surfaces that come in contact with meat appropriately.
If you try this I'd love to hear how you like it!
What a great idea! I have often thought of making my own cleaner since store-bought cleaners tend to give me headaches. Thank you for sharing this :)
ReplyDeleteAnd thank you for your kind words on my blog about my pictures - you are so sweet! I use a prety simple camera - just a Canon Power Shot A1000. I was acutally looking at getting a new one because the lens on my camera got scratched and you'll notice in some of my pictures a "lovely" black spot :)
Anyway, have a splendid weekend!
Hugs,
Stephanie

ReplyDeleteThank you for suggesting an alternative cleaner - we're attempting to only use natural products these days and I'll look forward to trying making my own.
ReplyDeleteHappy week to you!
Thank you so much for stopping by! I really would suggest it and I'd love to hear how it works for you!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the tip! I'll give it a try for my bathroom floors.

ReplyDeleteStopped by from Sunny Simple.
Thanks so much for stopping by Kim!
ReplyDeleteThis is great! I am learning as well about homemade cleaners and loving it! Way to go girl. I am stopping by from i should be mopping the floor blog hop!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by Susie! I'd love to know how you like the cleaner if you try it! I've also started making my own laundry soap! Much cheaper!
ReplyDeleteThanks fro sharing your cleaning solution recipe! We have white tile in our bathroom and I have been looking for something chemical free. This sounds easy and effective.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful tip, Lil! I use vinegar and newspaper to wash windows (or ammonia and newspaper) and I agree that vinegar is a good product for cleaning. Thanks so much for posting this.
ReplyDeleteI've never tried the vinegar alone but I'm sure it works great! Thanks so much for visiting Haworth!
ReplyDeleteLil I just realized why I'm about to kill myself on my floors! It's the PineSol! I just bought a bottle and now my floors are so slippery I've almost landed on the ground a couple of time! Going to have to switch that out!
ReplyDeleteI was slipping and sliding all over my tile floors too Julie! Let me know how you like it! It's very cheap and I've been very pleased!
ReplyDeleteWow, I actually HAVE some Dawn dishwashing soap on hand! So I could make this! (I also have vinegar on hand, it makes a great clothes softener and takes care of odors if I leave something in the washer too long, lol!)
ReplyDeleteSo do you find that you need to rinse your floors with water after you clean them with this solution?
Mom's the word,
ReplyDeleteNOPE! There is no residue and no rewiping the floors at all! With pine oil and Fantastic I was slipping and sliding and I couldn't stand it. I've been using this since I first posted this and haven't gone back!
Awesome! If you add a few drops of a nice smelling essential oil, it will smell good too! I put orange, lemon and lime in mine!
ReplyDeleteThe same can be used to wash windows. Put a drop of blue food coloring in it if you want.
ReplyDeleteI'm starting to be surprised that not everyone knows this recipe already! Simple and inexpensive and very effective.
Thanks daltxguy! Funny thing~ I DID put a drop of food coloring in it. ;) My hubby wasn't convinced at first but after using it he says it works just fine.
